Satellite-powered monitoring of global deforestation, wildfire events, land use change, desertification, and biodiversity across terrestrial ecosystems.
Forest & Fire Intelligence
Annual tropical primary forest loss from Hansen et al. (University of Maryland) / Global Forest Watch Landsat analysis. Fires accounted for ~35% of recent losses.
Brazilian Amazon annual deforestation as measured by INPE's PRODES satellite program. Monitoring since 1988. Deforestation rate fell sharply under policy interventions 2004–2014, rebounded 2015–2021, and partially reduced after 2023 policy changes.
Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) measures global vegetation density and health. Values approach 1.0 in dense tropical forests; near 0 in desert. Trend shows increasing arid zone expansion in sub-Saharan Africa and Australian outback.
